Why this blog?

Detail of Masai tribe painting

This is a selfish blog.

I don’t mean this particular post, but this whole blog.

I don’t mean selfish because I like my ideas and think the whole world should know about them (although that could be true but we will address that in psychotherapy..)

And I don’t mean selfish because I am trying to achieve any sort of fame or ego boost. In fact committing to starting a blog involves some fear and takes a certain amount of courage from people with big egos like me, since there is always the fear of failure and the possibility that no one will ever give a damn or read any of it.

The blog is selfish for other reasons, including mainly that I am trying to find – for myself, and hopefully for others too – a community of like-minded people, from those living in the next building to those living on other continents.

I invented Hedohumanics  to find them.

I invented Hedohumanics to find them, to consolidate them, so they become a tribe. I do not need my tribe to be physically close to me all the time. I need them to be intellectually close, and I want to know they are out there, spread all over, and I want to know they are able to take action in small or large groups, and have fun doing it.

As life goes by, you might find that you have collected around you by default people, including friends, accumulated through school and college, work, friends of friends, parents of children’s classmates, the gym, etc. We might hang out with many through force of habit, especially if they are harmless and good enough on a superficial basis. But how many of those truly make you feel good, you connect with at any lower more meaningful level, would have consciously chosen to be friends with had it not just happened by circumstance?

If you have any level of self-awareness as you move through life, you tend to want to surround yourself more and more with your kind of people, those who inspire you, those who are in sync with your value systems and beliefs, those who do not cause you intellectual aggravation (to be differentiated from challenge you intellectually, which is a good thing), those who you feel get excited about that same things – good or less good :) – that you get excited about, those who enjoy the same pleasures you enjoy.

Of course in my 46 years of existence, I have managed to collect a number of cherished friends all over the world – many right here- who I think would fit in this category of people I would consciously choose. But even though I already have a few Hedohumanics in my life, in my head the question has always been: how many of them are out there, and what can be achieved if a good amount can be identified and consolidated, and how would that impact the quality of one’s life, community, city, the world?!

And so this blog came to be, with several objectives:

  • Find more Hedohumanics, and build the tribe. A conscious attempt, rather than leaving this to pure chance.
  • Do fun things with the tribe: eat, drink, dance, travel, appreciate dark wit, go skinny dipping (optional :) )…
  • Have intellectual and spiritual exchanges, share meaningful experiences- stuff that feeds the mind and soul, stuff that gives us a feeling of security or anchorage in the turmoil that we live in.
  • Conduct small projects here and there that would make someone else’s life better. Form a critical mass to effect positive change. Hedohumanics like that…Soon, once there are enough numbers on this blog, there will be a mechanism to facilitate that joint action.
  • Make collective statements about issues…this idea of the silent majority (or worse, the weak minority!) is really not cutting it anymore…In many parts of the world, it is time for more courage, for different narratives to emerge, for groups to say we are here and we refuse to be passive or to submit to the least common denominator.
  • If No 2 was not enough, have more fun!

And that is the objective of this blog. Building the tribe, enjoying the tribe, forcing change through the tribe.

I would love to hear your opinion on this.
